CUBS WITH BIG OPPORTUNITY TO GAIN GROUND IN NL CENTRAL
With just under 40 games left in the regular season, the up and down, Chicago Cubbies have a huge chance to jump start a struggling offense and continue to find a way to lead the National League in wins. (71-52)
An offense that managed just 4 runs in 4 games (one solo HR hit in each game), was bailed out by terrific pitching outings by Lester and Hamels, not to mention a MLB record tying 7 double plays to close out a 1-0 team victory against the Pirates. Somehow the Cubs managed to go 2-2 in the series, and now the focus turns to a 9 game stretch against teams that are a combined 52 games under 500. A quick 2-game set against a lifeless Tigers team, 4 against the Reds in Wrigley, followed by the miserable Mets in town for 3. True, the Reds have had the Cubs number this year, but our boys will be looking for some revenge after a tough 4 game sweep back in June.
Despite injuries to Bryant, Morrow and Darvish, the Cubs must continue to win series’, especially against teams outside the playoff picture. A strong finish to August should put the Cubs in the driver's seat to win a 3rd straight NL Central title!
