The Village Squares
Music Genre | Jazz + Funk
The Village Squares' debut performance was to a standing room
only crowd in the tiny, dimly lit Voodoo Room at House of Blues San Diego. The stage was so tiny that the 10 piece band was as squashed together as the packed but electrified audience. They had only rehearsed ten songs, and so when the audience called for an encore, they jumped into an improvised blues (House of Blues Blues), lead singer Lizzie Shipton spinning out rhymes on the spot, and each member jumping in to showcase their chops with a solo. After the show, band and audience agreed that something magical and transient had happened that night. The Village Squares were on their way. Since that night the stages have gotten bigger, but the Squares' huge sound and passionate energy dominate nonetheless. Fronted by three beautiful and dynamic female singer-dancers and backed by powerful horns and a super tight rhythm section, they deliver high-energy soul music with a mode |
